You may find yourself asking what does all this mean? I know I sure did when I first began to study this spiritual system of psychological mind-body healing. If you have one or multiple unbalanced Chakras within your system, the energy will not flow throughout your system, as it properly should. Subsequently, the Chakras that are properly balanced will not receive the energy flow necessary for them to flourish. If a system is divided against itself in competition for survival, how could it function, as it properly should? It can’t! A Chakra can be unbalanced in two ways, it can either be too open or it can be blocked. Remember earlier how I said Chakras function like spinning wheels that filter energy throughout your body. Chakras that are too open spin too quickly, taking more than their share of energy. A blocked Chakra will spin sluggishly, or possibly not at all, thus not receiving enough energy. More »

The Chakra system of healing is rooted deep within ancient Indian principles of auyrveda, naturopathy, yoga, meditation and spirituality. With some rudimentary knowledge of the Chakra basics, you can begin to use it as a powerful form of self-study, empowerment and self-help.

Throughout this article, I will explore various aspects of the Chakra system, how it relates to you and the material world, as well as its functions and dysfunctions. Over the upcoming weeks and months, I will investigate each Chakra individually, providing you with an even more substantial understanding of this system of healing by analyzing each of its components. First, I will start with an overview of the system.

You may find yourself asking … what is this Chakra system? It can be seen as the source of your self-identity, as well the substance that fuels all that you do and all that you are. Your Chakras act as a system of energy filtration units that run along your spinal column, starting at the base of your spine and ending at the top of your head. You can visualize this system as a continuum of energy flowing up and down your spine. It provides the life and vigor that fuels your entire body, mind and spirit.

Within this system are seven specific Chakra areas that act as spinning wheels that move energy up and down your spine:
Root Chakra (Muladhara): Located at the base of your spine, extending through your legs and feet. Main issues — Survival, stability and grounding.
Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana): Located in your abdomen, hips, genitals and lower back. Main issues — Sexuality, relaxation and emotions.
Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): Located in your solar plexus, around the diaphragm area. Main issues — Energy, purpose and self-will.
Heart Chakra (Anahata): Located in the center of your chest. Main issues — Love, acceptance and balance.
Throat Chakra (Vissudha): Located at the base of your neck. Main issues — Communication, self-expression and creativity.
Brow Chakra “Third Eye” (Ajna): Located above and between your eyebrows. Main issues — Intuition, knowledge and perception.
Crown Chakra (Sahasrara): Located at the crown, or top of your head. Main issues –Spirituality, understanding, selflessness and wisdom.

Each of these seven Chakras is an independent entity, as well as interconnected aspects of a multifaceted system. Each Chakra has its own function, as well as its own specific manifestations of dysfunction. In layman terms, a dysfunctional Root Chakra will reveal itself through different symptoms and attitudes than a dysfunctional Heart Chakra will, and so on. An analogy using the Root Chakra as an example may help to clarify how this system works.

Your Root Chakra is located at the base of your spine, extending to the earth through your legs and feet, similar to roots of a tree. This is the first location in which you filter energy into your body from the earth. Now, if the roots of a tree are damaged or blocked, what happens? The nourishment that is necessary for survival becomes depleted. This leaves the tree weak, vulnerable, and unable to properly function, as it should. The same holds true for us humans. If any of your seven Chakras become blocked or damaged through negative events in your life, or archetypes engrained in your subconscious, you will become depleted the same way the root bound tree would.
