Q.In reading about osteoporosis on the Net, I continually hear about Evista (not yet approved here in Canada), HRT (which I am unable to take), and Fosamax (which I took for six months and had serious side effects). My doctors switched me to something called Didrocal (etidronate disodium). I am having no problem with this medication, but it concerns me that I cannot find anything about it — how it works long-term or even whether it is effective. My question has to do with weight training — heavy lifting, not toning. Is it safe for young teenage boys?
The high school football program in our town requires that a potential player be able to bench press, clean and jerk, and do squats lifting large amounts of weight. Each boy must accumulate a certain number of points by weight lifted in order to play. Peer pressure to lift large amounts does factor into this. For example, a 125-pound, 14-year-old boy is bench-pressing his own weight in order to play. A 200-pound, 17-year-old boy is lifting 350 to 400 pounds. More »
National Mammography Day, observed this year on Friday, October 15, is designed to raise awareness about the importance of having regular mammograms to detect for signs of early breast cancer. To assist women, over 2,000 American College of Radiology accredited mammography facilities will offer free or discounted mammograms through the end of October.
Upon returning from vacation recently, my daughters (ages fifteen and nineteen) were bothered by a style of parenting they observed in several other families who were with us. They have since referred to it as the “Jeopardy” style of parenting. They felt like they had spent the week with Encyclopedia Britannica rather than two young children. They felt the children needed more – more fun, more play and more humor.

8 oz. lasagna noodles
2 cups Morningstar Farms recipe crumbles
1 1/2 cartons cottage cheese
1 jar spaghetti sauce
16 oz. shredded cheese
Cook noodles according to package directions, drain, and separate noodles. In large saucepan, pour in sauce and recipe crumbles. Bring to boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes; take off heat.
