During the late 1950s, Swedish exercise physiologist Gunnar Borg proposed that people naturally monitor their physiological responses to exercise at both conscious and subconscious levels. In other words, most people have some sense of exercise intensity even without objective measures. They monitor sensations such as breathing difficulty, body temperature, level of perspiration and muscle fatigue.
